There are many pixel art indie games out there and sometimes developers go one step further by mimicking older consoles. Gamers usually can recognize when the 2nd to 5th generation of consoles is being mimicked. Null Drifter however goes bottom by being a 1-bit lo-fi shooter, developed by Panda Indie Studio. It’s not the first one (far from it) but still interesting.
Panda Indie Studio is a one man show developer known in the internet by the nickname Arabong. He developed 3 other games, costing $1 or less and two with very positive results and unsurprisingly have been improving in quality with the years. The next game in development is Project Starship X, a vertical retro shooter and the second game in the series.
Here’s the trailer:
Null Drifter has a very unique style. The art style kind of reminds me of R-Type but in 1-bit form. Like Atari games, this is one of those games that should probably played at night with lights turned off. It has this hypnotic feeling that will glue you to the screen.
This is a frenetic kind of game so you will need a lot of skill in order to beat it. Not really sure how many levels the game has. Maybe infinite levels, like arcade games used to have. It does have upgrades so with time you’ll be able to rush through the levels easier. According to the developer description this is a simulation used by the characters in Project Starship X.
Null Drifter has only two reviews so far but both positive. It’s available on Steam for $4.89.
